CARETAKER CLASSApril 26-May 2, 2026Location: Joseph Citta Boy Scout CampPrerequisite: NoneThe earth is the greatest provider we will ever know as humans.&nbsp; When we practice survival, we have an opportunity as well as a responsibility to give back and improve&nbsp;the health of a landscape as we gather all of our necessities.&nbsp; In this class we will teach techniques for maintaining and improving the health of wild areas that we might use as survivalists, and more importantly ways in which to improve the health of compromised landscapes and mitigate the damage of modern practices. Perhaps most importantly we dive into the mindset of the caretaker and learn to listen physically and spiritually, to any landscape we might enter and know how to heal it with our hands.&nbsp;The caretaker aims to not only "leave no trace," but to instead leave a positive trace.&nbsp; Contrary to popular modern belief, humans can actually be beneficial to the earth if we have the right values and the skills and passion to live those values.&nbsp; Humans have an important place in the web of life but sadly, too many of us have neglected our roles as caretakers.&nbsp; This class aims to be an immersion into a way of being that some might say taps into the core of our purpose as a species.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Long-time Tracker student and dear friend, Chris Fields-Johnson, will be joining the instructor team as a guest instructor at this class.&nbsp; With a PhD and masters in&nbsp; Soil Science and an undergraduate in Forestry, Chris has been able to make himself into a professional caretaker.&nbsp; He has followed his vision as a caretaker for 30+ years and brings to this class a wealth of knowledge and first-hand experience.&nbsp;Physical skills to be taught in this class include but are not limited to:-forest regeneration-soil layers and development-erosion control-tree pruning and thinning-controlled burning-biochar-mulching techniques-wildlife habitat improvement-spring caretaking for water sources-mitigation techniques for different habitat types-composting waste for soil health-waterway health maintenance-survival situation applications for caretaking
