A message from the Instructors
Dear Tracker Student,
It is an honour to have been asked by
Tom to develop the Scout protector Class.
This class mirrors all areas of Scout
training and combines the Survival, Tracking
and Awareness skills with that of an eclectic
martial artist, into the Ultimate Scout!
As in all Tracker classes, Tom has always
placed an emphasis on developing various
skills that can be applied to any situation,
regardless of the environment. This course
will include lectures as well as physical
instruction. In an injury free and non-intimidating
environment, you will learn and develop
these skills.
According to Tom, the "Apache Scouts
were the best survivalists and trackers.
They were masters of escape and evasion,
stalking and countless other skills. These
"other skills" included developing
warrior and "protector" skills."
Grandfather taught Tom and Rick "wolverine"
fighting techniques of the Scouts. This
combined the use of various weapons and
empty hand skill development. The Scout
was that of a peacemaker, always the last
one to pick up a lance. To quote Tom,
"the martial and demanding physical
fitness routines were not so much for
war or fighting application, but it was
a comfort to know that the ability was
there if the need ever arose."
During this training we constantly tap
the violent side of ourselves. It is by
gaining control over our violent side
that we can become peaceful individuals.
The scouts were the eyes, ears and protectors
of the camp and Tom has said repeatedly
that he doesn't want anyone messing with
his scouts!
As in all Tracker classes, this course
is packed with a lifetime of usable information.
At this class you will be exposed to a
long term process of self-development
and self-improvement. Success is not dependent
upon physical strength and you do not
have to be physically fit to attend this
course. We want to extend out gratitude
and appreciation to Tom for providing
students with this type of training and
for allowing the Protector Class to continue.
Also a thanks to "Big Frank"
Sherwood whose insights years ago helped
to make this course a reality. (Frank
was Tom's head instructor for 15 years.
He and his wife Karen, also a long time
instructor at the Tracker school, now
run EarthwalkNorthwest.)
We hope to see you there!
Sincerely,
Paul Bonner and George Larson and Vanessa
Herbst
A Letter of Recommendation from Tom:
Dear Friends,
The Scout Class has always been close
to my heart and in teaching it over the
years, I have come to feel that more was
needed and I wanted to expand further
into the lessons of self-defense. But
because of class size and time restrictions,
I was unable to do so. Starting in 1994,
I was able to exceed the limits I had
previously set for myself in the basic
Scout classes and explore the realms of
what Grandfather taught Rick and I.
Now I am excited to introduce another
phase of the Scout Class with the help
of Paul Bonner and George and Vanesa Larson,
connecting the skills I have taught and
the skills they are so expert in. Since
June of 1995, in the Pine Barrens of New
Jersey, they have been teaching a Defensive
Workshop that combines a variety of martial
skills and the skills of a Native Scout.
Additionally, they instruct the discipline
necessary for the spiritual, mental and
physical capabilities of a complete Scout!
All good medicine,
Tom Brown Jr.
